A single hailstorm or windstorm can crack vinyl panels, chip fiber cement, dent aluminum and rip siding off entire walls. Even small holes let water get behind the siding, where it can soak the sheathing and insulation unseen. After a storm, it pays to look at every side of the house.

What storm damage to siding looks like

  • Cracks, holes or chips, often on the side that faced the storm
  • Dents in aluminum or steel siding and trim
  • Panels blown loose or missing, exposed house wrap
  • Broken corner posts, soffit or J-channel around windows
  • Spatter marks on paint and dents in gutters, a sign of hail

Typical costs to replace damaged siding

Insurance: what homeowners should know

Homeowners insurance may cover siding damaged by a sudden, covered event such as hail, wind or a falling tree, subject to your deductible and policy terms. Wear, fading and age are generally not covered. Take dated photos of every damaged wall, keep any broken pieces, and contact your insurer before permanent repairs are made. Coverage decisions are made by your insurance company, not by us or the contractor.

Why a whole wall is often replaced

Older siding colors and profiles are frequently discontinued, and even available colors fade over the years. If new panels cannot match, many homeowners replace the siding on an entire side of the house, or the whole home, so it looks uniform.

FAQ

Common questions

How soon should storm-damaged siding be replaced?

As soon as practical. Cracks and holes let water reach the wall behind the siding, and the damage can spread through the sheathing and insulation.

Will you handle my insurance claim?

No. We are a referral service. The contractor you are connected with can document the damage and explain the scope of work, but coverage decisions are made by your insurer.

Can I replace only the damaged panels?

If matching panels are still available and the rest of the siding is in good shape, yes. When the color or profile is discontinued, replacing a full wall or the whole house is often the better option.
