Vinyl siding is the most common siding material in America for a simple reason: it costs less than most alternatives, never needs paint and handles rain and snow well. Modern vinyl comes in thicker panels, deeper colors and textures that imitate cedar shakes, board and batten or smooth painted lap siding.

Why homeowners choose vinyl
- Lowest upfront cost of the major siding materials
- No painting or staining – color goes all the way through
- Resists moisture and insects
- Wide choice of colors, profiles, shakes and trim
- Recouped about 97% of its cost at resale on national average (2025 Cost vs. Value Report)
What to watch out for
Thin, low-grade panels can crack in cold weather, rattle in wind and sag in heat. Thicker panels with a rolled nail hem hold up better. Vinyl also expands and contracts with temperature, so it must be nailed loosely with room to move – poor installation causes most wavy or buckled walls. Dark colors fade faster and can warp near reflective windows unless you choose a heat-resistant product.
Insulated vinyl
Insulated vinyl has a layer of rigid foam bonded to the back of each panel. It makes the wall stiffer and straighter and adds some insulation, which older homes with little wall insulation often benefit from.
FAQ
Common questions
How long does vinyl siding last?
Quality vinyl siding typically lasts about 20 to 40 years, depending on panel thickness, sun exposure and installation.
Can vinyl siding be painted?
It can, with special vinyl-safe paint in colors that are not too dark, but most homeowners replace faded vinyl instead of painting it.
Is thicker vinyl worth it?
Thicker panels resist impact, look straighter on the wall and last longer. For homes in cold or windy areas, many installers recommend at least a standard or thick residential grade.
